The comprehensive examination is a process in which Dr. Goris takes necessary records to provide a thorough diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. This examination will include:
Oral Cancer Screening: Approximately 42,000 people will be diagnoses with oral cancer this year in the U.S. and about 8,000 people will die from the disease. Although, a significant percentage of oral cancers can be attributed to alcohol or tobacco use, human papillona virus (HPV) and unknown genetic factors may also be a cause.
As with all cancers, early detection of the disease increases the odds of a favorable outcome. We at Goris Dental Clinic have recently incorporated state-of-the-art low intensity light technology; VizaLite Tblue , to help us to identify precancerous and early cancerous lesions that may otherwise go undetected. We recommend oral cancer screenings using the VizaLite yearly along with our normal visual and digital cancer exams. Early detection does save lives!
Periodontal Examination: Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Dr. Goris and his experienced dental hygiene staff will perform a meticulous evaluation of your gums and bone supporting the teeth. They will look for the signs of this insidious disease; inflammation, bleeding, pus, and bone loss. If periodontal disease is detected, specific treatment recommendations will be discussed with you.
Occlusal Examination: The forces of your bite can sometimes adversely affect the positioning of your jaw and teeth. Through minor polishing of the enamel surfaces or smoothing fillings of the teeth, Dr. Goris can help redistribute and redirect the biting forces. Adjustments to chewing surfaces can often eliminate headaches that occur as a result of irregular biting patterns.
Caries Exam: During this thorough exam, Dr. Goris will visually check each tooth for decay. X-rays will be taken so that areas between the teeth and on the roots can also be evaluated. It is our goal to catch and treat dental decay in its early stages.
Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction Examination: TMJ is a condition that afflicts thousands of people. Frequent indicators of TMJ include popping and clicking of the jaw, limited jaw function, pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, and pain and pressure in the face and ears. We provide therapies that can eliminate this painful and frustrating problem.
Cosmetic Bonding: Want to change your smile in just one visit? Cosmetic bonding may be your answer. Comfortable and affordable, this procedure utilizes natural looking tooth colored composites that are sculpted over the outer surface of the teeth by Dr. Goris or one of his experienced tooth artists. The resulting smile is truly spectacular!
Porcelain Veneers: Often called “instant orthodontics,” porcelain veneers create the ideal smile with thin, custom fabricated porcelain wafers that are bonded to the outer surface of the teeth. These life-like, durable restorations can be used to conceal worn and broken teeth, straighten crooked teeth, close gaps between teeth, and hide discolorations and imperfections in the teeth. They can also be made to look as white as you want. Dr. Goris is recognized as a true master in the area of smile makeovers using porcelain veneers.
Teeth Whitening: Easy and inexpensive, teeth whitening will brighten almost any smile. Let us analyze your smile to see what whitening method will be best for you. You will love the results!
Tooth Colored Fillings: When dental decay is present and a filling is necessary, it is our goal to make the tooth appear as if it never had a cavity. We use nano-engineered composites and the strongest bonding agents on the market to create beautiful, durable dental fillings.
Orthodontics: The proper alignment of teeth is important for both appearance and function. Dr. Goris, a member of the International Organization for Orthodontics, has years of experience in straightening the smiles of young and old alike. His conservative and proven techniques result in a full smile and outstanding facial profile.
Treatment of Gum Disease: Gum disease is the #1 cause of teeth loss in adults in the United States. This progressive infection can initially be painless and unknown to the patient. Left untreated, gum disease can not only lead to tooth loss buy may adversely affect overall health. Dr. Goris and his experienced dental hygiene team are experts in the early detection and treatment of gum disease.
Crowns: Sometimes a tooth is too badly decayed or broken to be fixed with a filling. The solution is to cover the tooth with a crown. A crown is an extremely strong dental restoration that enables the tooth to return to normal form and function. A crown may be made of silver or gold metal, but most patients prefer tooth colored porcelain. Porcelain crowns are both strong and beautiful. They are also used in “smile makeovers” when existing teeth are too crowded, worn, or discolored for cosmetic bonding or porcelain veneers.
Fixed Bridges: If one or more teeth are missing in a dental arch and there exists healthy teeth in front of and behind the space, a fixed bridge may be the best option. A fixed bridge utilizes crowns to cover the teeth on either end of the space. These crowned teeth act as anchors for a artificial tooth or teeth that sit on the gum replacing what is missing. A bridge is cemented and is NOT removable. It is very natural in feel, function, and appearance.
Partial Dentures: Partial Dentures are used when several teeth are missing in a dental arch. The removable prosthesis utilizes clasps that grasp healthy teeth to stabilize denture teeth that sit on the gums in areas where the teeth are missing. A partial denture is a economical alternative to implant teeth and fixed bridgework.
Dentures: In situations where the teeth cannot be saved, dentures become the best option. Dr. Goris meticulously crafts dentures using a step-by-step approach that result in beautiful, natural looking and, of course, comfortable prosthesis. He uses only the best materials available in personalizing the denture to each patient’s unique needs and desires.
Implant-Retained Dentures: There are times when there is insufficient bone to adequately stabilize a denture. The result is a denture that is uncomfortable, causes sore spots, and simply doesn’t chew well. Implants placed in the jawbone can be used as anchors to securely hold the denture in place. This amazingly easy procedure can greatly improve one’s quality of life. Patients are thrilled by the tremendous increase in comfort and chewing efficiency.
Root Canal: If you have a dead or dying tooth, saving the tooth may be the best option. This comfortable procedure can provide pain relief by removing the nerve and the infection from the nerve canals in the tooth. Dr. Goris has successfully performed thousands of root canals. He uses the very latest techniques to efficiently and predictably return the tooth to a healthy state. Once the root canal has been completed it may be necessary to resurface the tooth by placing a crown over it.
Treatment of Jaw Disorders: Jaw pain, limitation of jaw movement, face pain and headaches can be the result of a problem with the jaw muscles, the jaw joint or both. Fortunately, the majority of these cases can be successfully managed. Dr. Goris has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of jaw disorders. His conservative approach to treatment has helped many suffering patients return to a normal, pain-free state.
Dental Implants: Dental Implants are biologically compatible metal posts that are surgically placed in areas where teeth have been lost. Consider them metal roots that attach to the jaw bone. Dental implants can be used to stabilize a denture or partial denture to prevent slipping or movement. They may also be used as anchors to support crowns and bridges. A highly experienced oral surgeon or periodontist recommended by our office will perform the surgical placement procedure for your implant. Dr. Goris will partner with the surgeon to follow your treatment to the restorative phase. Dr. Goris will complete the implant procedure providing you with a beautiful, stable, and comfortable smile.
Diagnostic and Preventive Services
Diagnosis and Treatment of Oral Disease: Dr. Goris and the dental hygiene staff are vigilant in the diagnosis and treatment of oral disease, some of which may be life threatening. Oral sores, lesions, and deformities that are discovered during the examination are evaluated, and if necessary, biopsied to determine the best treatment options.
Professional Dental Cleanings: We all build up varying amounts of bacteria-infested plaque on our teeth. If this plaque is not effectively removed on a daily basis tartar builds up, tooth decay can begin, and gum disease can occur. Prevention of these problems by regular dental cleanings is essential to maintaining a healthy, properly functioning smile. Our experienced dental hygiene team will check you for gum disease, broken fillings, worn and cracked teeth and do a thorough oral cancer examination. You will have your teeth cleaned and polished both above and below the gum line eliminating the plaque and tartar that can cause dental disease and bad breath. Fluoride may be typically applied to help strengthen the teeth. You will be instructed in proper methods of tooth brushing, flossing, and using adjunctive dental health devices. Dr. Goris will also do a complete examination of your mouth, compare his findings with those of the hygienist and make appropriate treatment recommendations.
Sealants: We at Goris Dental Clinic are all about prevention. That’s why we are huge proponents of pit and fissure sealants for children. This simple procedure involves bonding a plastic cover over the grooves of erupting molars. This cover then blocks bacteria from congregating in these very decay-susceptible areas of the child’s teeth. Sealants are tremendously effective in preventing decay in children. We highly recommend them.
Fluoride: The evidence that topically applied fluoride is an effective treatment in preventing dental decay is irrefutable. We recommend the application of fluoride for both children and adults at each dental hygiene visit. For those individuals who are highly susceptible to decay we may recommend more frequent office application of fluoride along with daily home application of prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste or gels.
Sensitivity: Sensitivity can sure take the fun out of eating and drinking. It may be a single problem tooth or it may involve many teeth. We at Goris Dental Clinic are determined to reduce and hopefully eliminate this very annoying problem. Since there are many reasons for tooth sensitivity, we must first determine the cause(s). Then we personalize the treatment modality to your specific situation. This may involve application of appropriate desensitizing gels, pastes, or liquids to the problem areas. It may also include behavior modifications, dietary changes, GI medications, tooth reshaping, night guard wear or a combination of the above. In certain cases a crown or even a root canal may be necessary. We have years of experience in successfully treating this very challenging problem. We are committed to getting you comfortable.
Mouthguards: It is estimated that as many as 30% of adults in the United Stated have a destructive tooth grinding habit. This grinding can lead to worn teeth, sensitive teeth, broken teeth and at times, unrestorable teeth. Since most of the destructive grinding occurs at night, we recommend comfortable, custom-fitting, soft night guards. These mouthguards have proven to be a very effective defense against destructive processes brought about by teeth grinding.
Custom Sportsguards: Protecting your teeth during athletic activity is critical. We recommend custom sportsguards to prevent chipping or breaking of teeth. Custom sportsguards offer a light and comfortable fit that’s designed just for your mouth to protect your teeth and gums from injury. In addition, patients report that they do not affect breathing, airway, or athletic performance. A custom sportsguard is especially important for patients with orthodontic appliances. Ask us about custom sportsguards for you or your children!
